KC Scout radio upgrades

KC Scout has updated its radio system! The new Scout E8 System through Motorolla has replaced the outdated MIP 5000 as of May 2021. The new software is an advanced interface for dispatching through a workstation desktop. It allows an operator to both monitor and dispatch radio traffic from their computer with use of a microphone headset and handheld click or foot pedal.

This upgrade offers a variety of benefits to the KC Scout team but the first and foremost is that it allows the TMC to continue communicating and disseminating information from our first responders to our Department of Transportation partners.

"The former radio console was a wonderful system, but we had used it to the point that the software was outdated," explains Traffic Systems Supervisor Kelly Alvarez. "It had reached end-of-life," she finished.

The new Scout E8 system is much more user-friendly and provides a high level of flexibility and customization. The most noticeable feature for operations is that this system allows staff to take the radio ‘on the go’ and use the console on laptops or other workstations with the use of additional licensing. In the day and age of COVD and remote work possibilities, this is a huge advantage.

The acquisition of the Scout E8 console was a huge undertaking for the Scout Internal Radio team. Now that the TMC successfully using the new system, the team will now move on to upgrading the other half of our radio system (aka the hardware). The back half of our system is comprised of four physical radios which will need to be replaced in the next few years. Stay tuned!
