KC Scout is made up of numerous team members on both the Missouri and Kansas side of the metro area. Proper communication and teamwork amongst these various roles is key to Scout’s continued success.

The push for connectedness led KC Scout to create their very own interactive organizational chart with information to help employees get to know one another and also establish a chain of communication. While it may look like a standard flow chart at first glance, this tool actually dives much further than initially meets the eye.

"Teamwork is really the basis of Kansas City Scout. The people are the foundation of our success. If you have a great team, there's nothing that can't be done," says KC Scout Manager Randy Johnson.

The idea to create a tool to better connect and introduce the team to new employees was first introduced by TMC Operations Manager, Amy Stevinson. She turned to MoDOT Senior Communications Specialist, Lairyn McGregor for help. After hours of researching various software packages and even meeting with an outside vendor, Lairyn knew there was a quicker and more economical way to create this tool.

“It’s important we create a product that helps teams succeed while ensuring we are spending taxpayer dollars wisely. I used my expertise with Microsoft PowerPoint to create the org chart knowing it would be easy for others to use for their own teams," explains McGregor.

Other members of Lairyn’s KC Scout Communications team jumped in to help gather the necessary information resulting in a new chart that links different slides to a corresponding chart.

"It was amazing to see the new org chart being created on the same philosophy that it represents: synergy and work family.  I was impressed to watch Lairyn collaborate with Amy’s vision of an interactive org chart and then create an end product that exceeded all of our expectations," said Johnson.

Clicking on any name in the chart brings up a wealth of information such as:

  • A photo of the employee
  • Office location
  • Days and times in the office
  • Contact information such as phone number and e-mail
  • Preferred method of contact
  • Job description
  • Who the employee reports to
  • A list of the employee's job responsibilities
  • Information on how the employee prefers to be recognized for accomplishments
  • Hobbies and interests outside of the office
  • The employee's work anniversary and birthday

"This tool will be a great resource to anyone wanting more information on the KC Scout team both professionally and personally. In times where team members are busier than ever and can feel disconnected, these sorts of tools are especially beneficial," explains McGregor.

KC Scout is always looking for new ways to make Missouri and Kansas roadways safer, more efficient and innovative. This chart is a great way to connect the employees who work together to make KC Scout a safer and positive place to work.
