Emergency Response lends a hand in litter pick-up

Emergency Response operators are nothing short of heroes. They respond to all sorts of traffic scenarios ranging from traffic crashes, stalled vehicles, and interstate shut downs. One thing we don’t hear about quite as often, however, is their assistance in keeping Missouri roadways clean.

Emergency Response operators pick up accident and roadway debris daily. Recently though, they organized their first ever litter pick up on a portion of MoDOT right of way and collected 30 bags of trash. The area they selected along I-70 is near the Emergency Response Building and what they refer to as their own backyard.

“Because our building is adjacent to the highway, it gets noticed by many.  I wanted to spruce up our backyard and try to make the area between 18th Street and 23rd Street look like our lot and building,” explains Incident Management Coordinator Marcus Slaughter.

All morning and evening shift operators and supervisors participated, along with two KC Scout locators.

This was the first of many future litter pick-ups the group plans to organize.

The group will be bigger next time as more members of KC Scout begin to join and make a difference.

“I know this is and was a large task, but each person stepped up and delivered. I thank them for being the change and an example to others, says Slaughter.

Special thanks to all who participated in this service to the department and state of Missouri.
