Two new KC Scout Board Members

  Jon Nelson – MoDOT State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer Jon Nelson is the State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer for MoDOT. In this role, Jon leads the department’s highway safety and traffic efforts.  Jon is a registered professional engineer and has worked for MoDOT since graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2003. He has extensive experience with the Highway Safety and Traffic Division where he has worked in numerous areas, including highway signing, striping, intelligent transportation systems, traffic operations, and highway safety. Jon is most passionate about working with others to provide a transportation system that is both safe and reliable. Jon and his wife, Sarah, live in Jefferson City, MO with their two daughters, Riley and Makayla.  Mike Moriarty – KDOT Dir. The TSMO Conference came to Kansas City

MoDOT and KDOT personnel attended the Transportation Systems Operation (CTSO)’s Annual Meeting for the AASHTO Committee, which was held on Wednesday, August 28 through Friday, August 30 in Kansas City, Missouri. Those from the KC Scout team included Randy Johnson, Shari Hillard, Michael Flory and Kelly Alvarez. Randy Johnson co-presented with MoDOT’s Ray Shank, Alex Wassman, Ploisongsaeng Intaratip, and Owen Hasson on MoDOT’s TSMO Activities. Topics touched on MoDOT’s I-270 Project, Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Program, I-70 TSMO updates, and MoDOT’s newest Emergency Traffic Control guidance. The conference focuses on transportation system operations and associated intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and emerging technologies with a goal of improving safety, system reliability, and highway system performance. ER Operators attend Child Passenger Safety Conference in Iowa

Emergency Response Operators Hector Ortiz and Kennith Robinson attended the 2024 Child Passenger Safety Conference in Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, Sept. 9 through Tuesday, Sept. 10. The conference included guest speakers from organizations like Safe Kids News, Seat Belt Planet, and the National Safety Council. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to attend this conference and learn ways to help keep children safe,” stated Ortiz. The conference is a way for agencies to network and discuss ways to make a difference within their communities and utilize the proper safety practices. Emergency Response Operators are always on the road and play a huge part in identifying if children are not buckled in safety. “I am grateful we can come together and strengthen our knowledge on how to keep the youth safe,” stated Robinson. KC Scout attends the OOIDA Health and Wellness Fair

Scout Operator Jennifer Chambers and Emergency Response Shift Supervisor Ed Jackson represented KC Scout at the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association’s Health and Wellness Fair on Thursday, Sept. 19. OOIDA is a national trade association based out of Oak Grove, MO , dedicated to serving “owner-operators, small fleets and professional truckers; to work for a business climate where truckers are treated equally and fairly; to promote highway safety and responsibility among all highway users; and to promote a better business climate and efficiency for all truck operators,"  according to their mission statement . OOIDA employees had the opportunity to attend the fair and learn about different health and wellness organizations within the KC area. Two car seats were donated from Kathy Zents with Safe Kids to MoDOT’s Emergency Response team to utilize at the event. The car seats were won by two employees of OODIA.
